Getting the right fit in baby shoes is more important than almost any other shoe-buying consideration. Poorly fitting shoes can interfere with foot development, cause discomfort, and even affect a child's gait as they learn to walk. Here's a practical guide to finding the perfect fit every time.
How Baby Feet Grow
Baby feet grow fast — considerably faster than shoe brands would like you to believe. Babies' feet can grow a full shoe size in 2–3 months. This means that shoes that fit perfectly at 9 months may be constraining by 11 months. Checking the fit regularly (every 6–8 weeks for early walkers) is important.
Measuring Baby Feet at Home
You don't need a shoe store to measure accurately:
- Place a sheet of paper on a flat, hard floor.
- Stand your baby on the paper (or have them sit with their foot pressed flat).
- Trace around the foot — including the heel curve and all toes.
- Measure from the longest point of the heel trace to the longest point of the toe trace.
- Add 10–15mm for growing room. This is your shoe length target.
Width Matters Too
Baby feet are proportionally wider and more rounded than adult feet — especially at the toes, which naturally splay when bearing weight. A shoe that's the right length but too narrow is just as problematic as one that's too short. To check width, look at the front of the shoe when it's on: there should be a slight broadening at the toe box rather than the sides pulling inward.
The Thumb Rule
After putting the shoe on, press your thumb between the front of the baby's longest toe and the end of the shoe. You should feel approximately 10–15mm of space — enough room for growth, but not so much that the foot slides around inside the shoe. If you can't fit your thumb, the shoe is too small; if your thumb sinks in more than a centimetre, it's too big.
Signs a Shoe Doesn't Fit
- Red marks on the foot after removing the shoe
- Toes bunched or cramped when the shoe is on
- Baby resisting having the shoe put on or walking differently while wearing it
- Baby trying to remove the shoe frequently
